Happy New Year

Hello and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable time over the holidays, and were able to spend time with family and do some fun things.

We are now in the crunch before report cards, and students need to settle back in and focus on work.  Students have set goals, and they should keep these goals in mind, and work towards achieving them in the timeframe they set out.

Students need to remember that in less than 6 months, their time here at Thorncliffe will be done, and they will be moving on to middle school.  Now is the time to develop good habits, and learn how to learn more independently.

Hello Students and Parents of 5C:

What a wonderful field trip we had last week to the Children's Book Bank.  The students were extremely well-behaved on the TTC and at the book bank.  All students listened with such attention to the wonderful story, and everyone walked away happy with their book choice.

I wanted to let parents know that the book bank is open during the second week of holidays.  Here are the hours:

Wed. Jan. 2 - 10:00 - 6:00
Thurs. Jan. 3 - 10:00 - 6:00
Fri. Jan. 4 - 10:00 - 3:00
Sat. Jan. 5 - 10:00 - 3:00

Special Programs:

Wed. Jan. 2 at 12:00 - Monster Bookmarks
Fri. Jan. 4 at 12:00 - Puppet craft
Sat. Jan. 5 at 12:00 - Snowflake craft

Story times are every day at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The book bank is at 350 Berkeley St. near Parliament and Dundas.

Students must be with a parent, but even the parent can choose a book!!!

My last day this week will be Wednesday, since my daughter is having a fairly serious surgery on Thursday.  Because of this, we would like to have a class celebration on Wednesday at the end of the day.  Please consider buying a treat for your child to share with the class.  No nut products, please.  There is a sign-up sheet in class.

I hope you all have a relaxing holiday and spend time together.  Don't forget to continue to read and write, visit the library, go outside and play.

Interviews

Hello!

It was so lovely to meet all my parents, and discuss your child's progress.

If your child was with you during the interview, have them tell you what they are going to work on for the next few months.  If your child was not present, please tell them what we discussed, and how they can be doing better.

It is very important to set goals using the feedback I gave, and work towards improving the rest of the year.  Students should especially focus on learning skills, because when they get better, so do the academics.

Please continue to ask your child about school.  Avoid asking "What did you do today?", and ask specific questions like "What unit of math are you doing?  What did you learn about that today?  What problem did you solve and how?"

I'm Back!

Hello Students and parents of Room 204!

I'm back after two hospital stays and a confusing illness.  Hopefully, I will continue to get better and better. I am sorry that I missed some exciting things the past few weeks.

My supply teachers commented what a lovely and helpful class they were, so I am very proud of them.

Progress reports go home next Tuesday, November 13, and interviews are also that week.  I would like to see all parents so that we can discuss progress.  Remember that there are no grades on this report card.

We have about 7 weeks until the Winter Break, but we have a lot of work to do.  Please remind your children that they should be reading every day, and writing in their Writer's Notebooks at least twice a week.  Students are very behind on our 30 Book Challenge and their writing.

October's Here!!

Hello!

It was so lovely to see many parents at our Curriculum Afternoon!  Thanks for coming to see our classroom, and hear a little about Grade 5.

The school year is moving along.  Students have had a little difficulty getting used to routines and expectations.  Please remember about daily reading and Writer's Notebooks, and finishing up work not done in class.

October is Responsibility month.  I'm finding that many students in our class need encouragement for being responsible for work, classroom jobs, and our environment.  We need to act as a community to ensure that our learning environment is safe and enjoyable.  We want to learn about responsibility in October, but use the skills all year.  Giving your child responsibilities at home helps them learn about being responsible citizens.

On Tuesday, we welcomed Ms. Gordon, a teacher candidate from Queen's University, to our class.  She will be with us for 6 weeks.  Over that time, she will be teaching lessons, working with small groups, and working one-on-one with students.  We all look forward to working with her.

Before you know it, it will be time for Progress Reports and Parent-Teacher interviews.  Students should continue to work hard, listen, focus, participate, and remember that EVERYTHING they say and do in class is taken into consideration when report cards are created.

Welcome to 2018/2019!

Hello parents and students of Room 204!

I am delighted to once again be teaching Grade 5 to this lovely group. 

We have had a good start to the year, getting to know each other, and doing activities which set the environment for our classroom community.  We are continuing to work on attentive listening, and being more responsible as Grade 5 students (reading instructions, knowing what to do by looking at the daily Agenda, remembering our belongings and classroom jobs).

This blog is where you will find information about our classroom:  reminders, important events, homework, challenges, and what we are doing in class each week.  I update it either every week or every second week.  Please check back to see what's happening!

I look forward to getting to know students better, and to meeting parents as the year goes on.  It is important that we all work together so that your child can be as successful as possible.

Back to Business!

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone enjoyed the March Break. And coming up, we have a 4 day weekend!

Students were quite distracted and hyper last week as we came back from March Break.  I hope that they will settle down, as we have so much to do before June.

Please check the "Reminders" page for upcoming important dates.

Soon, class hockey will be starting, and most of the students have signed up.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our class to bond, and participate in a sport together.  It is also crucial to remember to be good sports, and to allow everyone to play and have a good time.  Keep in mind that not everyone is at the same level in hockey.  Work together as a team, and encourage and support one another.  This also fits in with the April Character Education trait of Co-operation.  What does co-operation look like, sound like, and feel like?

You have only 3 months left of being at Thorncliffe Park.  Make the most of it!  Join a club!  Try something new!  Make a new friend!  Be kind to everyone!  Challenge yourself!  You want to have wonderful memories of your last few months of Grade 5.
