Welcome to Grade 5 in Room 204!!!

I am so sorry students and parents that this welcome note is so late.

We've already been through 3 weeks of school, and I am so excited about this year. This group of students seems enthusiastic about learning, and have been respectful, attentive, and humourous.

This year, I will be teaching your child Language, Math, and French. Ms. Halliwell is their Science teacher, and Ms. Kwong teaches them Social Studies and Art. Their Gym teacher is Mr. Dodds, and Ms. Rainsberry-Parker teaches Music, Drama, Dance.

To communicate with any of us, the best way is to write a note in your child's agenda. The school has agendas available for $5 or you can provide your own. It is important that they have something at school with them every day.

I will be posting on this blog what is happening in class, but ask your child specific questions about activities. I know from experience that if you ask, "How was school?", they will say "Fine", and walk  away. So, ask your child about:

. The Key to their Success
. Me Bags
. Books we've read: Name Jar and Chrysanthemum
. Figure Me Out Math
. Math Scavenger Hunt
. Length of Summer Math

This week:

Language - This week the students will be doing the CASI reading assessment so that I can see where they are, and how I can help them.  We will continue to read and analyze narrative texts.  In writing, we will be using thesauri to find adjectives and adverbs to describe what makes us happy. I will also be introducing the Independent Reading assignment and the Writer's Notebook programme.

Math - We are beginning our Number Sense unit on large numbers and decimals. Students should be able to read and represent numbers up to 100,000 using words, expanded form, place value, base ten blocks.

French - Students will finish presenting their comics using classroom instruction expressions.  We will then learn to form -er verbs, especially the verb aimer so students can write and read about things they like to do.

Science - Students are investigating Human Body Systems through hands-on activities.

Social Studies - Ms. Kwong is discussing rights and responsibilities and levels of government in Canada.

Art - Students are using their names to do perspective in their Art.
